The Euro 2021 finalists have provided an incredible selection of some of the finest footballers to grace the sport; from the Inspirational Paul Gascoigne (who was also known as ‘Gazza’) in the early 1990's to the ever-present Phil Foden in recent times. However, they last lifted the prestigious Jules Rimet trophy in 1966, but here are the reasons why this new era of ‘The Three Lions' will end this trophyless draught and finally end 56 years of hurt so there’s no more need for dreaming.
Squad Re-Vamp After a disappointing 2014 World Cup in Brazil and Euro 2016 tournament in France. England needed a change, turning to former England international, Gareth Southgate (Current England under 21s manager at the time) after a rocky ending to Allardyce’s short reign. Meanwhile, since they crashed out in the early stages of the last two tournaments, Southgate’s team have completely redesigned the previous team with youth and creativity. With the likes of Bukayo Saka, 21, and Jack Grealish, 27, creating a whole new revolutionised attack while, it is a completely new system at the back, consisting of a 5 back without the ball but 3 back with the ball most likely consisting of Kyle Walker, John Stones and Harry Maguire as the 3 centre-halves.
Recent tournament runs
In addition, the new look England squad have overcome the odds in recent tournaments, in which they finished their first World Cup fourth after narrowly missing out on a place in the final against eventual winners France. During the most recent tournament of Euro 2020/21 England took it one step further in taking the country to its first final since 1966, eventually losing out to Italy on penalties. The opportunity to make history in Qatar, by winning the whole tournament by bringing ‘Football home’ for the first time since the 1966 team will only push this team further and spur them on to win the tournament after the recent heartbreaks in recent tournaments.
Their number 9
England have a star-studded squad featuring high quality options all over the pitch, with frontline options such as Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Manchester United talisman Marcus Rashford. Adding a player who has scored over 190 goals in the Premier League and on course to become England’s all-time top goal scorer at this World Cup, Harry Kane and you have something incredible with so much potential. The Spurs attacker is the heartbeat of this team, the entire squad works around him. It could be Kane’s first professional trophy, and with the striker almost certain to break Wayne Rooney’s scoring record, its written in the stars that he lifts the trophy in Qatar. Whenever the England captain is on the pitch England will always pose a threat, constantly creating chances and have more than enough to go all the way this winter.
